2016: happiness

2016: happiness

Recently, I’ve seen and heard about happiness.  A lot of friends ask, “Are you happy? Does this make you happy?”  The internet and films delve into the ways in which we can find happiness in our lives.  The answer seems elusive or scientific. We try to understand it in the laboratory of our hearts and our minds. We take tests to quantify our happiness, we hunt for it in books, in our pockets, in our conversations with friends and lovers.

Here’s an ever growing list of the happiness I keep in my pocket.

  1. A good pen.  For writing down thoughts and writing addresses on envelopes.
  2. Margaret Atwood- all her novels, poems and essays.
  3. Aquaphor- the best ointment for all my dry parts.
  4. Deciding: on that Netflix movie, on what to have for dinner, on love.
  5. Time.  The unexpected moment, the extra minute and being on time (not late).
  6. Dinner at Astrid y Gastón. A once in a lifetime meal with a once in a lifetime friendship: Vicky.
  7. Coffee: genius juice.  The lightning for getting things done.
  8. Surprise. The unknown.
  9. Understanding.  Between family and friends. Among strangers.
  10. Kindness.

What is on your list? And in your pocket?
